Are you a podcast-listener? We’ve talked about podcasts for graduate students before, but as you know, whatever you’re interested in, there’s a podcast for that! Here are some that may be helpful in writing your dissertation – and writing in general, too. Writing a thesis or dissertation can be a lonely endeavor, but listening to podcasts can help it feel less so. Even after your dissertation, if you’re interested in writing books or articles, these podcasts can help provide some tips, laughs, and inspiration for your own journey and work.

Piled High and Deep

In this podcast, the hosts talk with PhD’s from around the world about their research, the stories associated with their research, and talk about what they’re doing with their research now. Guests have included those who’ve gotten their PhDs in art history, psychology, astrophysics, public health, ancient history, food science, and more.

The Writer Files: Writing, Productivity, Creativity, and Neuroscience

In this podcast, Kelton Reid looks at famous writers to see how they maintain creativity, keep writing, and overcome writer’s block. He also talks with professionals about their writing strategies and the various tools that are available for writers. Recent topics include how to finish your book, how to stay creative, and creativity vs productivity.

I Should Be Writing

If you read any of the Star Wars novelizations, you’ll recognize Mur Lafferty, the author of the Solo novelization. She has a podcast called I Should Be Writing, and also a podcast on more advanced topics in writing, Ditch Diggers. ISBW may be a bit basic for dissertation writers, but it’s a good confidence booster and a reminder to keep plodding forward.

Grammar Girl: Quick and Dirty Tips for Better Writing

This is a great podcast for both native English speakers and those for whom English is a second language, full of tips on grammar, punctuation, and style. Recent topics include dangling participles, what it’s like to be a book editor, working as a freelance writer, conjunctions, spelling bees, semicolons, and more.

The Creative Penn Podcast

Joanna Penn delves into a range of topics with her podcast, including self-publishing, social media for writers, the importance of self-editing, writing with depression, craft tips, motivation, and so much more. Both academics and non-academic writers will find a wealth of information in this podcast.
