bookIf you’re in graduate school, you’re probably familiar with PhD Comics (“Piled Higher and Deeper”). These hilariously accurate comics portray common situations in graduate school, like the moment you realize the longest relationship you’ve ever been in is with your thesis, or the fine art of finding all the free food on campus. Created by Jorge Cham, a PhD in Mechanical Engineering, the comics are a great way to laugh and find camaraderie in what can often feel like a stressful and isolating journey.

It’s important to continue to do things you enjoy while writing your dissertation – all work and no play isn’t healthy for anyone, and many students find that taking a break from work allows them to return to the dissertation with a refreshed outlook and approach. One of the things I enjoy is reading, and it just so happens that the creator of PhD Comics put out a book, entitled We Have No Idea: A Guide to the Unknown Universe.

I am a total science geek, and love learning about subjects that are relatively different than anything I’ve formally studied…like astronomy, string theory, and space. This book takes a fun approach to BIG things, like what the universe is made of, and what, exactly, is space? Written in clear, concise, humorous language, peppered with Cham’s illustrations and comics, the book is the perfect thing for when you want a well-written read that won’t overwhelm you.

The book came out yesterday, May 9th – perfect timing for a fun but informative summer read! When you’re ready to get back to editing or formatting your dissertation, we’re always here to assist you.
